You can help to make your community/hapu safer for women and children.
Violence is a crime that affects us all. A community response is needed to end violence.
• When you witness or hear about violence, don't be afraid to ring the Police on 111, or Child Youth and Family. A woman or child could be in danger- It is your business.
• Support someone you know who is experiencing violence. They may need practical help, or just someone to talk to. If you raise the subject with them sensitively, you will let them know that you can be trusted.
• Help provide public information about ending family violence. Put Women's Refuge posters and pamphlets in you local shops, health centres, supermarkets, marae, and community centres.
• Challenge all forms of violence in your communities. Let people know that violence is unacceptable, on the sports field, in schools, on the streets, and in homes.
• You may be able to support anti-violence activities in you local neighbourhood as a volunteer.
• It is important to act safely, both to protect yourself and those at risk. Keep personal information about family violence confidential.
