At Women's Refuge:
• Women are valued and treated with dignity; and children are treasured.
• You have the chance to meet other women/wahine who have also experienced violence.
• You can learn about living without violence in a friendly, non-judgemental supportive setting.
• Wahine Maori are recognised as Tangata Whenua.
• Lesbians are respected.
• Different needs are understood.

Women's Refuges provide support services in the safe house or in the community. You don't have to come into the safe house to receive help from us. We can talk to you on the phone, come to your home, or meet you in another safe place. We support women alone, or with children. You don't have to be beaten up to use Refuge services - the most common form of violence experienced by women we work with, is psychological/emtional abuse.

All advocates are trained in family violence issues, and work to provide culturally-appropriate services. Many have experienced violence themselves, so they know something about what women who are abused go through.

There are now 12 kaupapa Maori Refuges, operating for wahine and tamariki.

In Auckland, there are 2 Refuges for Pasifika women and children, and one Refuge for Asian women and their children.

All other Refuges provide general services for women and their children from all cultures and backgrounds.

Women's Refuges have a policy of supporting and respecting lesbians and women in same-sex relationships. Many Refuges have lesbian and/or bisexual workers who are available to work with queer women.
