Women's Refuge has an ongoing fundraising and awareness programme. See below for some of our latest fundraising activities.
NZ SCULPTURE ONSHORE - Friends of Women's Refuges
Women's Refuges throughout the country have benefited from the proceeds of art exhibition NZ Sculpture OnShore, organized by long-term supporters Friends of Women's Refuges.
The NZ Sculpture OnShore is held in Auckland biennially, and is both a key arts event and a significant fundraiser for Refuges around the country.
Lexie Turner, chair of the Friends of Women's Refuges trust, presented Women's Refuge Chief Executive, Heather Henare, with a cheque for $300,000 in 2007.
The money was raised by commissions on sales of art and tickets to view the NZ Sculpture OnShore exhibition. Two years previously organisers were pleased to be able to hand over $200,000 to Women's Refuge and are delighted that the success of the 2006 event has enabled their donation to increase by 50%. An important factor in its success was the support of sponsors led by Hesketh Henry Lawyers, which included Royle Trust, Premium Real Estate and Natural Habitats.
The $300,000 is tagged to help the Refuge movement in two areas: Emergency Essentials for Children (bags with T-shirts, shorts, underwear, socks, toiletries and maybe a toy) will be provided for children in Refuges; and copies of the Women's Refuge resource book Fresh Start will be printed so that every woman entering a Refuge will receive a copy.
The book published by Women's Refuge, Fresh Start: A Practical Guide for Women Wanting to be Free From Abuse includes information about surviving domestic violence and helping children, as well as practical, legal, financial and other information. It is in its fourth edition. Copies of the book can be obtained from local Refuges or by contacting the national office.
